What are Peptides?
Peptides are a short chain of amino acids, generally <70 AA (> 70 becomes a protein). Peptides can be natural, bio identical or altered (synthetic). Seemingly simple peptides are found to regulate most every known process and system in the body via a tissue specific manner. While hormone therapy and optimization was the mainstay of anti aging medicine, it is becoming understood that regulatory peptides are the master controls of many functions of the body, including hormone production.
Currently, peptides are available that are shown to safely and effectively improve and modulate specific parts of hormone production, immune function, the sleep cycle, the production of inflammatory mediators, DNA replication, cell division and renewal, cancer cell destruction and apoptosis, libido and sexual arousal, tissue healing and specific biological functions of the brain, skin, eyes and urinary and reproductive system.
Peptides vs. Hormones
Hormones generally work on nuclear receptors with resultant gene activation and protein synthesis. Peptides are generally non-genomic that act on membrane receptors to activate an intracellular signaling cascade. Peptide signaling molecules generally have a more of a rapid response with less side-effect when compared to hormones. Peptides have a more precise tissue-selective effect while hormones have less precise broader effects.
Aspects of Aging
- Immune decline and dysfunction
- Increased inflammation and oxidative damage
- Multi-hormonal decline
- Reduced neurologic functioning and connectivity
- Decreased protein synthesis
- Decreased detoxification
- Tissue and organ atrophy
How peptides can aid and reverse aging:
BPC-157 (Body Protective Compound) – BPC is composed of 15 amino acids isolated from human gastric juice. BPC accelerates the healing of many different wounds, tendons, ligaments, muscles, nervous system and other organs. This peptide is known to increase growth hormone, promote outgrowth of fibroblasts, cell survival under stress and decrease pain in damaged areas.
BPC is used to prevent gastric ulcers, improve digestive function, protect and heals inflamed intestinal epithelium (leaky gut), eosinophilic esophagitis, help inflammatory bowel disease and protect liver from toxic insults.
Potential target conditions:
- Lyme disease
- Chronic viral or intracellular infections
- Autoimmune disease
- Inflammatory conditions
- Post surgical
- Chemical sensitivity
- GI ulcers/inflammation
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Leaky gut
- Prevent/treat heart arrhythmias
Bremelanotide (PT 141) – PT 141 is developed from melanotan II for aphrodisiac effects. It is estimated that 43 % of females and 30 million men suffer from sexual dysfunction. Unlike other sexual enhancement drugs, PT 141 works at the level of the brain, thus eliciting a rather natural sexual response.
